MUKONO – The Office of the Prime Minister has on Friday, August 23, offered relief aid to residents of Katooke village on Kome Island in Mukono District.

This follows an appeal from Mukono South MP, Hon Johnson Muyanja Ssenyonga to the office, and other Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) on Friday, August 16 after fire destroyed people’s property on the island.

A truck containing the items was handed over to the LCV Chairperson Mr Andrew Ssenyonga and the Katooke sub-county Chief Mr Moses Bwogi.

Mr Ssenyonga revealed that they have received food, source pans, tents that they will be giving to the residents of Katooke village.

“We thank the government through the Office of the Prime Minister for offering the help,” said Ssenyonga.

“We have recieved 600 bags of rice, 200 Source pans, 100 tents as a startup for these people,”he added.

He also asked other organizations to come and help these people.

Mr Bwogi said that 204 homes were destroyed in the fire.

He said: “About 204 homes were destroyed and 1450 people were left homeless.”

He also hoped that his people use the resources they will receive well

The aid has been transported to the island to help those who lost their homes and property in the fire that was said to have been started by unmentioned woman who woke up to light her charcoal stove with some fuel of paraffin mixed with petrol which exploded into a huge fire that she failed to stop destroying homes, businesses, animals and birds.
