RUKUNGIRI – One person has died on spot when an explosive device blasted.
The incident took place on Thursday, August 29, at around 2:15 pm at Kinyamahwa cell Kahoko parish Nyakagyeme s/c Rukungiri district.
The deceased has been identified as Julius Ahereza an 18-year-old resident of Rwamunyinya cell, Masya parish Nyakagyeme sub-county Rukungiri district.
Mr. Ahereza has been a domestic employee in the family of Mr. Gershom Behayo the area Local Council V Councillor.
Mr. Ahereza was at home collecting rubbish at a mango tree to the rubbish pit to burn it when a big blast (most likely of a rusty grenade) was heard which killed him instantly.
Medius Behayo an eye witness told our reporter that Ahereza had finished collecting garbage and was taking it for burning when she had a blast.
“He had finished collecting garbage, as he ascended to the collection pit to burn it, I heard a blast and on getting closer to him I found his intestines out” Behayo narrates what transpired.
He told me that he was dying, that was his last word “Behayo added”.
Police was notified, visited the scene and cordoned it as police bomb squad is expected to investigate and establish which type of device it is.
Ahereza’s body was taken to Rwakabengo health centre for postmortem and inquiries underway and case registered at Rukungiri police station on file number CRB 1054/2019.
Elly Maate the Kigezi region police mouthpiece called on the area residents to remain calm as the police bomb squad carries out investigation to establish the real type of the explosive.
“We have already notified our police bomb squad to visit the crime scene and initiate the kind of an explosive that caused the death” Maate said.
