KALIRO – A 35-year-old man has survived being lynched by angry students of Bright Future Senior Secondary School in Kaliro District for allegedly sneaking into the girls’ dormitory.
Mr Saddam Tagenya, a resident of Kaliro Town, is said to have entered the dormitory at about 2 am on Tuesday and was saved by police that arrived in time as students descended on him.
The officer-in-charge of the Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (CIID) at Kaliro Police Station, Mr David Agi, said the suspect was rescued and taken into custody.
“We are holding him to help in investigations and the reason why he entered a girls’ dormitory at night,” Mr Agi said.
Intruders have been blamed for causing many school fires. On the night of November 11, 2018, arsonists sneaked in the school and burnt the Senior Three dormitory at St. Bernard’s SS –Mannya, killing at least 10 students and injuring 37 more. The unpleasant incident has since been blamed on security laxity.
“The arsonists first locked the doors of the dormitories before setting them on fire even when the rescue came it was difficult to evacuate the students inside the dormitories, some would have been saved but died out of suffocation,” Henry Nsubuga, the then headmaster of the school, said.
In a bid to stem intrusion, the school has hired more security guards and passed strict security rules urging the teaching staff and student for cooperation.
On April 14, 2008, Budo Junior School dormitory was set ablaze and 19 … their lives and according to police, the fire was caused by arsonists.
