KAMPALA – Kyadondo East Legislator Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobiwine has commended police officers who arrested a one John Bosco Mugisha, who is being charged with the murder of the late Derrick Mulindwa, a boda-boda cyclist, in the most gruesome manner via his social media pages.
According to Bobi Wine, many of the people who watched the video showing the murder of the late Mulindwa were praying that the suspects are arrested so that they face justice.
“Today, we are grateful that this arrest has been made and the citizens will be hoping that the ends of justice are met. The officers who conducted the operation that led to this arrest deserve a pat on the back,” reads a Facebook post.
He added that, “We have always prayed for a pro-citizen police force. A force that does not spend all its energies doing politics, but solving the real issues which affect the common person such as the rampant murders and robberies.”
Bobi wine further noted that one of the cardinal duties of the Uganda Police Force under Article 212 of the Constitution is to prevent and detect crime.
“For the police to effectively do this, its capacity has to be strengthened. Its technological competences have to be elevated. Inevitably, the welfare of the men and women in uniform has to be improved as one of the ways you solve the problem of criminals colluding with some officers in the commission of crime or in eluding justice,” said the legislator.
In addition he said that if the money and energy spent on fighting the opposition was put to fighting crime and protecting the citizens, the country would be a safer place for all of us.
“We believe that all these are achievable if we have our priorities right,” Bobi Wine wrote in an online post.
According to a statement signed by SP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the suspect was arrested at Nsiike 1, Rubaga Division, Kampala on July 16.
Onyango said that Mugisha John Bosco alias Mukiga admitted that he is the one in a video with his colleague who he said is called Young Mulo.
Police, however, says that the suspect revealed that his colleague was later killed by a mob in another robbery case.
“Mugisha admits that they had robbed the motorcycle from Mityana on July 2, and they were traced up to Makyindye in Kampala where the mob allegedly killed his colleague. Mugisha alleges that he escaped that day went to Kabale,” police said in a statement.
Mugisha will be charged with murder and aggregated robbery.
The suspect and his colleague are said to have attacked, strangled and repeatedly hit a boda-boda cyclist with a hammer to the head, killing him instantly. They fled the scene immediately after battering their victim. The duo also stole his motorcycle.
The incident, which occurred on June 29, 2019, at around 4 am, at Kakeeka Zone, Rubaga Division, in the Kampala district, was captured on the CCTV cameras of a nearby nursery and primary school. It was retrieved by the police and widely circulated for the public to help in the identification of the two male suspects.
