ENTEBBE – The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) that prevents poor fishing methods on Lake Victoria has advised fishermen to adopt better fishing methods that go hand in hand with laws.

In this meeting, fishermen at Kigungu landing site told UPDF about the challenges that they face while doing their work.

They say that there are some UPDF soldiers who mistreat them (Fishermen) whenever they (soldiers) find them in the lake and that in most times they take their fish and nets.

Speaking to the fishermen, Brigadier Michael Nyarwa, the UPDF commander in fighting poor fishing methods, says soldiers stopped fishermen from smoking fish because they were trapping young ones.

In the same meeting, Brig Nyarwa taught Fishermen on the way how to trap fish using modern boats and nets.

On stopping fishermen from smoking fish, Brig Nyarwa says, they will be granted another chance to do their job but on condition that they don’t do the smoking in forest as they were initially doing, something that UPDF says it destroys the environment.

Birungi Caroline, the Woman MP Kyamuswa says the reason as to why they called this meeting was to warn those that interfere with the arrangement of preventing poor fishing methods.
