MBALE – Police in Mbale District are investigating circumstances under which a student of Nyondo Secondary School died.

The student identified as Doreen Akosi, aged 19, who was in Senior Two, allegedly collapsed in the classroom and died at St Theresa health centre III, where she had been rushed on Friday.

This comes four days after the death of another student, Denis Wadeba, 18, who died shortly at the same health centre after he was caned by the teacher failure to do her assignment.

The Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, Mr. Robert Tukei, confirmed the death.

“We have registered the death of another student at the same school, where another one died earlier and we have started the investigations,” he said.

Mr. Tukei explained the girl died at St.Theresa Nyondo health centreIII, where she had been rushed by teachers and fellow students for medical attention after collapsed in the classroom.

“She was pronounced dead on the arrival at the health centre,” Mr. Tukei, said.

According to police, the father of the deceased, Mr. Peter Wamwa, told detectives that his daughter had been having a problem of heart disease.

“But as police, we have already opened a general enquiry File at Mbale central Police Station. Our officers are on ground to dig more information about the incident,” he said.

Mr Tukei, however, maintained that the two incidents are not related and appealed to students and community at large to remain calm as investigations go on.

The School Headteacher, Ms. Florence Bweri, said it was natural death.

“It is the medical personnel who have that report about the disease which killed her but what I can tell you for now, it was natural death,” she said.

The Resident District Commissioner Mbale, MR Barrasa Ogajjo, when contacted also confirmed the death but said he had not yet to get more information.
