MAKERERE – The 84th Guild Government that has been under Hon. Papa Were Salim as a Guild president was on Friday 1 dissolved as new leaders were elected.
The new Electoral Commission was elected to organize the 85th Guild elections that will usher in a new Students Guild Government. This was during the Guild Representative Council session.
Among the candidates is Ssekindi Faizol who was elected as the Chairperson of the commission.
Nuwagaba Ayebare Agatha will be the Vice-Chairperson as Kato Martins is to work as the Public Relations Officer.
Nkesiga Duncan is the newly elected Finance Commissioner and Kiiza Godfrey to serve as the General Secretary.
Recently Makerere University approved new Makerere University Guild election regulations and restricted all guild rallies in halls of residence and guild campaigns to only four rallies.
The new regulations also bar students from acts of hooliganism and use of obscene language during the campaigns. Aspiring guild candidates shall be required pay non-refundable fee of Shillings 200,000, Guild Representative Council-GRC Shillings 100,000 and Students Common Room for halls of residence Shillings 50,000 down from Shillings 60,000.
According to the regulations, in order to ensure the dignity of the guild, those aspiring for election as guild leaders must be registered students of Makerere University.
It also states that the aspirant must be a fully subscribed member of the Students Guild, be in their second year of study or above, have no pending retake (on normal progress) and at least a CGPA of 2.8.
The Students Guild is a link between the students’ body and the University Administration. It is headed by a Guild President who is democratically elected by the students in accordance with the existing guidelines.
