Dr Paul Kawanga Ssemwogerere has regained consciousness having been rushed to hospital after collapsing during prayers

LUBAGA- Democratic Party President, Nobert Mao has revealed that Paul Kawanga Ssemwogerere has regained consciousness having been rushed to hospital after collapsing during prayers at Rubaga Cathedral this morning.

Mao made the announcement on his Twitter noting: “Our former @DPSecretariat1 President Dr. Paul Kawanga Ssemwogerere who was unwell earlier this Sunday, is now much better. He is fully conscious and will be up and about soon. We thank those who continue to lift him up in prayer. We thank those who responded quickly to the emergency.”

Ssemwogerere, 84 collapse happened during a mass held to commemorate 52 years since the establishment of Kampala Archdiocese at a church where he is a regular.

Video clips on social media showed congregants carry Ssemwogerere out of church as the Church Child kept on playing the hymns in an attempt to restore calm among the church goers.

Ssemwogerere’s first shot at top office occurred in 1980 where he took part in the contested 1980 election that was won by Milton Obote.

After NRM capturing power in 1986, Ssemwogerere served as Minister of Internal Affairs, later Minister of Foreign Affairs and was later named Minister of Public Service.

President Yoweri Museveni later named Ssemwogerere as Deputy Prime Minister but he resigned in June 1995 from his Government posts to try another chance at Presidency during the 1996 general elections and lost yet again, but this time to Museveni.

Ssemwogerere later retired from active politics in November 2005 and was replaced at DP Presidency by late John Ssebaana Kizito.
