KAMPALA– Legislators on the Parliamentary Committee on Commission’s Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) has directed Joseph Katera, the Managing Director of Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UDCL) to refund USD76000 approximately Shs290,284,402 that was spent to train the board members whose term was expiring in two weeks from the training.

The directive was issued during a meeting held between the Committee and UEDCL team that had appeared before COSASE to respond to audit queries raised by the Auditor General, John Muwanga.

During the meeting, Cuthbert Abigaba Kibale County MP wondered how the institution would spend tax payers money on such a training, yet the said board members’ tenure was soon ending, deeming the expenditure as wastage of tax payers money.

“To train someone at the end of the term doesn’t make sense because we were even doubtful if there was proper assessment done and therefore, we considered it wasteful expenditure which means that the tax payer lost money because there was no value in that training that was conducted.

“So we have recommended that money be refunded and expect them to come with modalities on how they are going to get that money,” Abigaba said.
