ARUA – Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi, aka, Bobi Wine was on Monday evening arrested while his driver was shot dead as engulfed Arua Municipality on the closure of campaigns for the parliamentary by-election.
The hitherto peaceful election descended into chaos on Monday evening as supporters of different candidates retired to their different offices in Arua Town after a hectic day of final campaigns.
However, supporters of Independent candidate Kassiano Wadri, who Bobi Wine is backing, and those of NRM’s Nusura Tiperu clashed when they met on Inzikuru street, prompting soldiers of the Special Forces Command (SFC) to fire at the former’s supporters.
Wadri’s supporters also retaliated by pelting stones at the soldiers and in the ensuing melee, Bobi Wine’s driver was shot dead.
Bobi Wine later shared pictures of the accident, claiming that he was the target and that his hotel had been arrested.
Police and security sources later confirmed of his arrest.
A day to the final campaigns, police had brought in several water cannons, tear gas trucks and hundreds of police personnel. During a press briefing on Monday, the regional police commander, Jonathan Musinguzi said they were more than prepared to counter any violence that would erupt.
