NTUNGAMO – Police in Ntungamo District are holding three students of Hillside Academy Itojo for allegedly stabbing a laboratory attendant at Itojo hospital over having sexual relations with school girls.

According to the District Police Commander, Mr Damian Katwesiime, a group of 10 students invaded the hospital staff quarters at around mid-night on Sunday and stabbed Mr Moses Asiimwe multiple times with knives. Mr Asiimwe is nursing severe wounds at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

Hillside Academy is a private secondary school located in Itojo Parish, Itojo Sub-county in Ruhama.

Strikes in schools in the district are not new. Last October, students at Standard High School broke into a violent strike and burned down two dormitories. They were protesting among others bad food and being forced to wear school uniform at all times.

The protest was led by S.1 and S.3 students who contributed money and bought petrol from Ntungamo town. The fire completely razed down one dormitory, and spread to another, which was partly saved by the police fire brigade.

In May, 2015, students of Muntuyera High School, Kitunga, in Ntungamo District, were sent home for staging a strike two days after reporting for the second term. The students were protesting the school administration’s introduction of casual uniform to be worn after classes and on weekends. A black pair of trousers and a white-collar polo shirt were introduced last term as casual wear.
