Retired Lira Bishop Oyanga is dead

TORORO – The Rt. Rev. Joseph Oyanga, retired Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Lira is dead.

Bishop Oyanga, died in the wee hours of Sunday July 22 morning at St. Anthony hospital in Tororo where he had been admitted for some time , according to information from the Uganda Episcopal Conference.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later on Sunday, the Uganda Episcopal Conference indicated.

Bishop Oyanga, was born in Omoro, Lira Diocese, on 28th Feb.1936. He was ordained a priest of Tororo Diocese on 19th May 1963 in Alanyi parish by Bishop Cypriano Kihangire of Gulu. He worked in Tororo Diocese until 14th of July 1989, when he was elected second bishop of Lira Diocese.

He was ordained Bishop of Lira on October 1,1989 and he retired on December 2, 2003. He was succeeded by Bishop Joseph Franzelli, the current ordinary of Lira Diocese.
