Muslims during prayers in Kampala on Friday.

Mufti Ramadhan Mubajje, has asked government to stop looking at Muslims as the first suspects in every crime committed in the country.

Speaking at Eid Mubarak prayers at Old Kampala on Friday, Sheikh Mubajje said many Muslims have been tortured by security agencies, believing they are behind many crimes such as murder and kidnaps.

“We ask government to stop looking at Muslims as the first suspects in the murders,” he said.

He demanded compensation for families of those Muslims who have been tortured in many trumped up charges.
His remarks come against the backdrop of over 15 Muslims who were arrested in connection with the murder of former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

Several were acquitted of the charges and government ordered to compensate each Shs80m for the torture.

Following the 2010 bombings that claimed over 70 lives, several Muslims were arrested. Some were later acquitted of the crime by court.

Sheikh Mubajje urged the Muslims to unite for development.
