KAMPALA: The spouse of the Ugandan Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Amb. Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu, has reported him to Kajjansi Police Station on Entebbe road, accusing him of battering her.
Lukia Abdu Rahman, in her police statement on Monday, says for long, Amb. Ssemuddu has beaten her over what she describes as minor issues, ever before their children.
“It doesn’t matter whether the kids are around or not. He keeps beating me up. For long, I have endured assaults by this man. The situation is now unbearable,” she says.
Rahman, who also showed the torture marks on her body, especially the back, says she has been married to the ambassador for 23 years and they have 23 kids.
However, Amb. Ssemuddu, when contacted, denied the allegations and said some of his enemies are using his wife to damage his reputation.
“She knew what she was doing because she was sent to provoke me. She grabbed me by the neck and all I did was defend myself. Going to police was meant to destroy my reputation,” he added.
He also accused his wife on engaging in extra-marital affairs.
Dr. Ssemuddu started his work in Saudi Arabia in 2013 and presented his credentials to King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia in Deewana Palace, in the port city of Jeddah.
Rahman’s relatives also accused Kajjansi Police officers of arresting them when they first the matter to police. We could not immediately reach the police officers on duty over the matter but the police spokesman for the Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Directorate, Vincent Sekate, promised to investigate the matter.
This is not the first time an envoy is accused of domestic violence.
The United States authorities in January forced the Uganda government to recall the Minister Counselor at Uganda’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., Mr. Dickson Ogwang over domestic violence.
Officials said U.S. police in December received an emergency call from Ogwang’s residence in Washington and on arrival, they found Ogwang’s wife “nursing bruises caused by severe beating” by the diplomat.
Police would have detained Ogwang but the diplomat invoked his diplomatic immunity hence surviving arrest.
