BUSHENYI– Six candidates have been nominated to contest for the Igara County East by-election, according to Bushenyi district returning officer Godfrey Mbabazi.

The Igara East County seat fell vacant following the nullification of Andrew Martial’s victory in last year’s general election by the Court of Appeal last month over voter bribery and defamation.

The two-day exercise that ended on Thursday saw five men and one woman nominated to contest for the seat.
They are Andrew Martial (NRM), Michael Mawanda Maranga (Independent), Bedads Kananura (Independent), Christine Ninsiima (FDC), Benjamin Katana (Independent) and Armstrong David (Independent).

The Democratic Party candidate, Joseph Musinguzi, failed to beat the deadline for nomination and was ruled out of the race.

Musinguzi attributed his failure to beat the deadline to failure by the party to send him money for nomination.
“The party had promised to send me money for nomination but failed to send by close of nomination,” he said.
Mbabazi said campaigns will commence November 26 end on December 12 and the polling date will be December 14, 2017.

Speaking to PML Daily shortly after the nomination exercise, Martial said he is ready for battle and will once again defeat what he termed as his enemy.

Mawanda, an Independent candidate, said he wants to restore the pride of the constituency and improve service delivery.

Mawanda had lost to Martial in the 2015 NRM primaries, which saw him contest as an independent candidate in the general election which he lost and decided to file a petition.
