KAMPALA–Police have recovered over 150 mobile phones and netted 15 suspects as efforts to crackdown on mobile phone thieves intensify.

The suspected criminals were arrested in an operation conducted yesterday and are currently detained at Central Police Station pending investigations.

With just a few days remaining to the festive season, mobile phone criminals are on the loose and are terrorizing city dwellers.

The criminals normally target those working and walking in down town, Kampala city. The deputy Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson, Luke Owesigyire, said the operation targeted mobile phone thieves around down town areas.

He said the police acted following a tip-off from a victim and wide public outcry.

“Phones worth millions of shillings were recovered,” Owesigyire said, adding that the operation will continue as Christmas festivities draw nearer.

Black spots notorious with mobile phone theft include areas near Shoprite Entebbe Road, St Balikuddembe Market, Nakasero Market and Old Taxi Park.

The phone thieves have also expanded their networks to the city suburbs, especially in the evening when there is too much traffic jam.
