Unidentified assailants yesterday night attacked Bukuluba sub-county in Kalungu district leaving destruction and injury in their wake.
The yet to be identified thugs raped a teenager (names withheld) and beat up several residents in the 2am attack.
A source told our reporter that the most affected villages were Kasebuti and Masaaba, all in Bukulula sub-county in Kalungu district.
The rape victim is a daughter of a nurse at Bukulula Health Centre IV who was not at home at the time of the attack.
The thugs also unleashed terror on babies. One Nambogo says the thugs took her one month-old baby and dropped her in the trading centre.
“They took away my baby. I had given up thinking they had killed him,” Nambogo said.
Among the victims of the Thursday night attack include Richard Mangala, Winnie Katushabe and Jane Nayagga, among others. They are currently admitted at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.
Southern Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi says Police is yet to identify the intention of the thugs. He, however, says that preliminary investigations indicate that the assailants are robbers interested in robbing locals of their property.
“They (assailants) first raided Matia Mugejje whom they robbed Shs300,000 and proceeded to Badru Tamale’s home where they robbed Shs150,000,” Kigozi said.
Incidents like these are very common in Kalungu. A week ago, a group of assailants descended on the villages of Kabale-Bugonzi in Bukukulu sub-county and beat up locals.
The attack followed anonymous leaflets which were dropped in different areas of the district prior to the invasion.
Following the incident, Security minister Gen Henry Tumukunde visited the area and blamed the attack on Opposition politicians who want to dent the image of government.
