KAMPALA–President Museveni has finally expressed support for the age limit amendment bill that has of recent become a subject of heated debate in the country.

President Museveni’s approval follows a meeting with the NRM caucus on Friday.

The amendment bill authored by Igara West MP Raphael Megyezi if passed, will allow President Museveni who will be 77 years by 2021 run for another term of office. President Museveni is currently serving his fifth term.

Addressing the press shortly after the meeting, NRM Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa said the President has expressed his support to Cabinet’s position on the bill.

She said they had never met him as cabinet ever since the decision was taken.

President Museveni had previously shrugged off the age limit debate as time wasting and diversionary.

At the start of this week, however, he warned members of the opposition against threatening supporters of the bill that he would respond to them in the strongest terms possible.

Meanwhile, Nankabirwa revealed that the President cautioned NRM MPs in the meeting not to bribe people during consultations.

“He told us to only cater for people’s facilitation, refreshments, venue hiring and the public address system,” she said.

The Opposition recently launched countrywide campaigns against the proposed amendment of Article 102 (b) of the Constitution to scrap presidential age limits.
