KAMPALA–Police are investigating circumstances under which two police officers were shot dead and others injured in Kalerwe, Kampala, on Saturday night.

The incident occurred just hours after armed men raided a police post in Kabalagala, a Kampala suburb, and stole a gun with 30 rounds of ammunition.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Emillian Kayima ,confirmed the incident in a statement that read: “A few minutes past 9:00pm today, workers of Denovo Bread Company were attacked by gunmen who “shot and killed two of our police officers – SPC Mubiru and SPC Moses Karungi.”

Kayima also disclosed that driver of the Noah car in which the workers, mainly cashiers, were travelling, Kasirye Ssengozi, was also shot and has since passed on.

The shootings have raised concern of worsening organized criminality in the country. That armed men can shot at police officers and other people in a busy town like Kalerwe is a very worrying trend.

Kayima said cashiers were being trailed as they collected cash from different sale points where Denovo Bread is sold, including Nateete, Mutundwe, Kasubi, Bwaise, Nabweru and Lugoba.
The cashiers were then followed to Kawempe, Mpererwe and Kalerwe on Gayaza road where the bloody incident occurred.Cashiers injured have been only identified as Nakatudde, Nakiwala, Nantongo Angella and Winnie Nansamba.
