BUTALEJA–One person was shot dead and several others injured when residents of Kangaraba in Himutu sub-county in Butaleja district attacked Kangaraba Police Post demanding the release of their comrade who was under police custody.

Police identified the deceased as Silver Barasiyo 20. Trouble started when residents reportedly opposed to government take-over of Doho Rice Scheme in Butaleja district on Monday requested police to allow them hold a meeting a request police turned down.

The residents, however, defied the police directive and went ahead to hold the meeting in which they resolved to attack those supporting the takeover of the rice scheme by government.

Those in support of the takeover reported the matter to police and the culprits were arrested.

However, on Wednesday morning, the locals opposed to the takeover attacked Kangaraba Police Post, demanding the release of their colleagues.

As Police was trying to disperse them, a stray bullet hit one Barasiyo, killing him instantly.

The angry mob in retaliation attacked the home of Himutu sub-county district councilor and destroyed property in addition to running away with a cow which was grazing on the compound.

Sowali Kamulya, the Bukedi Region police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said police has embarked on investigations. He said the culprits will be brought to book.
