At least one police officer has been confirmed dead and five others injured in Wednesday evening’s accident in Sipi region.

The accident that occurred around Sipi corner in Kapchorwa saw Michael Nagona a driver attached to the Police Flying Squad in Bukedi-Tororo die on the spot.

The injured have been taken to Mbale Hospital.

The officers, attached to the Police Flying Squad, are part of IGP Kale Kayihura’s escort detail. They were returning from Kapchorwa were the IGP Kale Kayihura travelled Wednesday for routine inspection and ascertaining security situation.

Gen Kayihura’s trip to the subregion follows the killing of a police officer on Tuesday at Boma Grounds in Kapchorwa.

Constable Charles Oulanya, who was attached to Kapchorwa Central Police Station, was killed by assailants on Tuesday. Police are investigating the killing that they are treating as murder—in which one of their own had his throat slit and his gun taken.

On Wednesday, the IGP toured the scene of crime and was reportedly due to return to Kampala but cancelled his journey upon the accident.

Gen Kayihura wasn’t in the convoy and the car in which the officers were travelling was not a Police vehicle.
