KAMPALA —NWSC was formed by statute on 16th Dec, 1972. However, the operations commenced in 1973.

By then, the corporation operated in 3 towns only namely; Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja.

The piped water network length then was less than 1000kms in the 3 towns.

In Kampala, the water network was upto Kyambogo-Banda.

Nambole was later proposed for an extension and a booster station was installed to pump water upto Nambole in 1991-92.

Along Masaka road, the water network stopped at Kabusu-Rubaga.
Other areas included; Makindye, Mengo, Ggaba road, Muyenga, Kisugu, Kibuli, Industrial area, Luzira, Nakasero, Kololo, Kibuli, Lubaga, Makerere, Mulago, Naguru, Mutungo, Kyambogo and Naguru. The network basically covered the 7 hills of Kampala then.

In Jinja, the network was not beyond the Owen falls Dam. Large scale factories i.e Nytil and Nile Breweries had their own independent private water schemes.

The network was later extended to Magagama barracks alongi Tororo Rd, along Kamuli Rd up to Namulesa, along Budondo Rd upto The Rayon Spinning Mill before Jinja Resort.

In Jinja, NWSC highest consumers then included UEB at Dam Waters Estate, Gaddafi & Magamaga Barracks, Copper Smelting Plant Staff Housing Estate in Masese, Walukuba West & East Estate, Rubaga Police Barracks and Civil Service houses around Crested Crane Hotel, etc.

In Entebbe, the network was only around the Colonial capital Town.

As the years went by, NWSC works were affected by war, pipes dried up and infrastructure was damaged.

After the 1986 bush war, stability returned and the corporation resumed works to serve more people.

In 2013, the Corporation was in 23 towns of operation and had a total network length of 6,994kms.

From 2014, the corporation underewent a tremendous turnaround. The utility moved from 23 towns of operation to over 256 towns of operation now.

The Network length more than doubled from 6,994kms then to more than 13,000kms off network now.

From the former colonial central business district, Jinja and Entebbe town, the corporation serves beyond Kampala. NWSC now serves 3 districts i.e Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono.
