KAMPALA – The United States government has donated 100 vials of monoclonal antibodies to Uganda’s Ministry of Health to combat the ongoing Sudan Ebola Virus (SUDV) outbreak. This donation, handed over by US Ambassador William W. Popp to State Minister for Health, Honorable Anifa Kawooya Bangirana, at the National Medical Stores, aims to enhance Uganda’s efforts to end the outbreak.
The monoclonal antibodies, a breakthrough in medical science, have the potential to significantly improve survival rates in Ebola patients. According to Ambassador Popp, “The United States’ donation of monoclonal antibodies is an important contribution to the global fight against Ebola, saving lives in Uganda, and making both America and Uganda safer.”
The ambassador emphasized the US commitment to innovation and global health security partnerships, stating that “Providing these groundbreaking treatments demonstrates the United States’ strong commitment to innovation, and as we respond to outbreaks like Ebola, we build stronger global health security partnerships that benefit us all.”
This donation is a timely boost to Uganda’s efforts to combat the outbreak. The treatments will be safely stored at the National Medical Stores until needed in the event of future cases. The US government had previously donated monoclonal antibodies during the 2022 outbreak in Mubento, which successfully managed the SUDV outbreak.
The US government has been providing sustained technical support to Uganda since the first day of the 2025 Ebola outbreak. This latest donation demonstrates the US government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening Uganda’s health system and responding to various health threats, including Ebola. By providing these treatments, the US is supporting Uganda’s progress in ending the Ebola outbreak and building a resilient health system to detect, prevent, and respond to future health threats.
As Ambassador Popp noted, “As we respond to outbreaks like Ebola, we build stronger global health security partnerships that benefit us all.” This donation is a testament to the strong partnership between the US and Uganda in the fight against infectious diseases.
