Ugandan comedian and Daily Show writer Joseph Opio nominated for 2020 Emmy Awards (PHOTO/File).

KAMPALA – New York-based Comedian Joseph Opio has been nominated in the 2020 Emmy Award in the category, Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series.

The Emmy Awards, or simply the Emmys, are American awards that recognize excellence in the American television industry. These awards are presented at different annual events throughout the year, with some events being more popular than others. This year’s edition however is special for Ugandans as we have two representatives on the list.

Opio who works with the Trevor Noah Show as a scriptwriter formerly worked at Urban TV and The Kampala Sun.

Another Ugandan, David Kibuka has also been nominated in these awards set to take place on September 21, 2020 at the Microsoft Theater Los Angeles, California and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

The two are listed alongside Dan Amira, head writer; Lauren Sarver Means, senior writer; Daniel Radosh, senior writer; Matt Koff and Randall Otis as well as Trevor Noah. They are listed against other writers of Full Frontal, Last Week Tonight, Late Night and The Late Show.

One cannot tell their chances of winning but just getting a nod as a nomination in these prestigious awards is a huge win for the Ugandans in the 72nd Emmy Awards.
