BUSOGA– Musician Magada Ronald alias “Maro” has joined a campaign aimed at ending the jigger endemic in Busoga region. The campaign is dubbed “Zero Jiggers”.

Maro has expressed optimism about the project saying that he is ready to raise awareness and sensitize his fellow Basoga and masses at large about maintaining proper hygiene to fight the vice that has dogged the region for a spell of years.

He has released a new song titled ‘Tundula’ that will be the anthem for the “Zero Jiggers” campaign.

“I am glad to be the voice that will kill the stigma attached to the infection and the diseases that come along with it by letting everyone know they can be infected if at all they don’t keep clean.” He said.

For many years, Busoga region has been affected with the vice and the infestation has been blamed on poor hygiene, dusty and cracked floors, and humans sharing accommodation with animals. The infection can lead to severe inflammation, ulceration and fibrosis.

However many people came out and said this is as a result of witch craft and a curse from God hence  making a great number to seek treatment from traditional healers instead of visiting conventional health care givers.

Locally, jiggers can be controlled through affordable measures like smearing the house floors with cow dung and wearing of shoes.

The campaign is an initiative by Sole Hope, a Jinja- based NGO whose mission is to offer hope, healthier lives, and freedom from foot related diseases through education, jobs, and medical relief
