KAMPALA — The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has called upon farmers in Busoga to start growing Hass avocado for commercial agriculture.

Kadaga said she visited the Musubi avocado farm in Mayuge and she learnt of growing Hass avocados as a lucrative cash crop.

“A tree of Hass avocado can on average produce fruit worth shs7 million per season, being productive for 15 years so this is definitely a great idea,” she added.

She was speaking at the launch of customer social responsibility (CSR) activities for RocketMe Agri-Farm on Friday, 26 February, 2021 at Kiige NARO farm in Kamuli District.

The Director General of NARO, Dr. Ambrose Agona said that Hass avocado is a crop that can be adopted as a cash crop in Busoga.

“The growth of Hass avocado as a cash crop is great for us nutrition-wise aside from its international demand; something that should be adopted by the population,” he said.

Agona said that National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) is willing to support any agricultural initiative and innovation within Busoga as long as it clamps down on the high poverty rate in the region.

Simon Ocen, the Country Director of RocketMe said the company, based in the United States and South Africa, deals in agricultural scientific technologies.

He said that they intend to set up two extraction factories for Hass avocado. “This project is estimated to cost about US$400 million and we plan on spending US$15 million annually on our CSR in the region,” he said.

Ocen added that they are going to give out five million seedlings of Hass avocado to farmers across the region and create over 1500 jobs.

“We shall have an agri-village with all the amenities needed for a satellite city. In two years, RocketMe will be able to pay in excess of shs400 billion in corporate tax surpassing MTN Uganda,” Ocen added.

The Prime Minister of Busoga, Dr. Joseph Muvawala urged the Basoga to embrace the planned investment for the area and support the initiative of agricultural transformation.
