The construction of Centenary Group’s state-of-the-art Tier 3 Green Data Centre in Masaka is progressing steadily, with operations set to commence in Q3 2025. This landmark project, spearheaded through the Group’s technology arm, Centenary Technology Services, represents a significant step in Uganda’s digital transformation journey.
During this morning’s site inspection, Centenary Group Chairman, Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu, led a delegation of Executives from both Centenary Group and Cente-Tech to assess the construction progress. The inspection revealed significant advancement in the project’s development, with civil works nearing completion and preparations underway for the technical installation phase.
“This data centre embodies our promise of equitable social and economic transformation for all Ugandans,” says Prof. Ddumba-Ssentamu. “We’ve intentionally prioritized local content in our construction phase, with several Masaka-based enterprises serving as key suppliers. From construction materials to support services, we’re ensuring that our investments create immediate positive impact in the communities we serve while building long-term digital infrastructure for the future.”
The facility, designed to meet international environmental standards, aligns perfectly with Uganda’s Digital Transformation Roadmap 2023/2024 – 2027/2028. It will support key roadmap objectives including enhanced digital infrastructure, data sovereignty, and the development of integrated digital services. The project demonstrates Centenary Group’s commitment to supporting national development goals through strategic infrastructure investments.
“Our compliance framework for this facility sets new standards in risk management and environmental protection,” notes Centenary Group Company Secretary, Brenda Magoba. “We’ve implemented robust data protection measures that exceed international requirements. The facility’s design incorporates multiple security layers to prevent data breaches while maintaining the highest levels of environmental and social safeguards. This includes advanced biometric access controls, 24/7 surveillance systems, and sophisticated environmental monitoring systems.”
The project’s technical implementation is advancing rapidly. “Civil works are nearing completion, and we’re preparing to transition into the compute infrastructure phase,” explains Peter Kahiigi, Chief Technology Officer at Cente-Tech. “As a Tier 3 facility, we’ll provide telecommunications companies with a reliable Internet Point of Presence, while also being fully equipped to support critical national infrastructure projects like the East African Oil Pipeline. The redundancy and reliability built into this facility ensure 99.982% availability. Our design incorporates multiple power sources, cooling systems, and network connections to guarantee uninterrupted service.”
The data centre project is a cornerstone of Centenary Group’s digital transformation strategy. It will enhance the Group’s capability to deliver advanced digital services while providing a robust platform for businesses across the region. The facility’s green design includes energy-efficient cooling systems, solar power integration, and sustainable water management practices, setting new standards for environmentally conscious digital infrastructure development.
The facility will also play a crucial role in supporting Uganda’s growing digital economy. With its state-of-the-art infrastructure, the data centre will enable businesses to leverage cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies while maintaining data sovereignty and security.
