KAMPALA — Carrefour, owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim in Uganda, will be opening its second store in Naalya at Metropex.
In a period of economic revival, officials say, the store seeks to accelerate its growth in the country.
Carrefour opened its first store in Uganda in 2019 — covering over 2800 square meters selling area at the popular Oasis Mall.
Carrefour is one of the largest hypermarket and supermarket chains in the world.
However, in February, Carrefour was punished for stealing and overexploitation of suppliers.
The retailer owned by Majid al Futtaim’s (MAF) was found in breach of exploiting suppliers through six clauses in its contracts that ensured it got cheaper prices as compared to other market players.
Carrefour was also accused of forcing suppliers to post their own staff at its outlets at their expense, and at times rejecting goods already delivered.
Every supplier was also required to deploy a merchandising attendant for each of its stores to man particular goods for two hours every day for six days.
The franchise was fined 10 percent of its gross sales, which stood at UGX 36 billion in 2018.
Carrefour was also barred from delisting suppliers unilaterally without notice for failure to meet its stringent supply contract.
Carrefour operates different store formats, as well as multiple online offerings to meet the growing needs of its diversified customer base. In line with the brand’s commitment to provide the widest range of quality products and value for money, Carrefour offers an unrivaled choice of more than 100,000 food and non-food products, and an exemplary customer experience to create great moments for everyone every day.
