JINJA – St. Mary’s Kitende came from a goal down to defeat Jinja SS 3-1 in the 2019 Copa Coca Cola Championships final played at Kakindu Stadium.

Lawrence Tezikya scored the opening goal of the contest for the home side before three second half goals by Kitende sealed a 9th championship for the Wakiso based giants.

Umar Kyebatala, Najib Yiga and Richard Basangwa scored the goals for Kitende.

In the match played on Saturday, Jinja SS started brightly and would soon find themselves in front on 7 minutes thanks to Lawrance Tezikya’s goal.

The goal was Tezikya’s 14th of the tournament ensuring he would later take home the top scorer’s gong for the second time in a row after doing likewise in 2018.

As they went in search of an equalizer, Kitende dominated the game for the rest of the first half but Jinja was resolute, going into the break with a slender 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes into the second half, Umar Kyebatala equalized for Kitende off a diving header to bring the scores to 1-1.

Six minutes later, Najib Yiga struck to hand Kitende their first lead of the game.

With time running out and Jinja throwing numbers upfornt, Richard Basangwa put the game to bed for Kitende, scoring his side’s third on the day.

After the goal, heart-broken Jinja SS fans started throwing stones onto the pitch and play was halted for a while. However, order was restored and play resumed.

In the end, Kitende ran-out 3-1 winners to clinch their 9th title, a first since 2015.

In the early kick-off, Buddo defeated Standard High school-Zaana 2-0 in the losers match to ensure they finish third in the tournament.

This year’s two week tournament which was hosted in Jinja, attracted 59 schools from across the country.
