Uganda booked a spot in the final of the 2019 AFCON U17 Regional qualifiers in Friday thanks to a 3-1 win over hosts Tanzania.

The Cranes did not have a smooth ride as they required two late goals to overcome the spirited home side.

The Uganda Cubs raced into an early lead inside five minutes through Iddi Abdul Wahid but the advantage was soon wiped out by Tanzania six minutes later.

With 13 minutes of the 90 to play, Alau John Kokas restored purity for Peter Onen’s side and the victory was sealed when Amiri Njiri who put through his own net to ensure the Cranes seal a spirited 3-1 victory.

The rest of the first half was near to uneventful as both sides want into half time locked at one all.

At the start of the second half, Thomas Kakaire received a beautiful pass from Wahid at the edge of the box but shot over the bar, much to the agony of Uganda.

On the hour mark, Tanzania defender Sulaiman Lupeto pulled back Iddi Abdu Wahid just outside the box but the resultant free kick taken by Juma Ibrahim was superbly saved by the Tanzania goalkeeper.

Uganda’s relentless pressure finally paid off on 77 minutes as Alou John Kokas scored from close range to give Uganda a 2-1 lead.

Yiga Najib had a golden opportunity to seal the game with seven minutes to play but pulled his shot wide while one on one with the goalkeeper.

Uganda were nearly made to pay for Yiga’s missed opportunity but had custodian-Delton Oyo to thank as he pulled of a spectacular save to deny the ‘Young Taifa Stars’ an equalizer on 90 minutes.

In additional time and with Tanzania pushing for an equalizer, Uganda broke away as Wahid found Alou with a simple pass and the later sent a low ball into the area which was connected by Amir Njiri and bounced into his (Njiri) own net for the Cubs’ third goal of the day.
