KAMPALA – Popular opposition figure MP Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine has announced plans to rescue his predecessor MP of Kyadondo East Constituency Apollo Kantinti, who was Thursday June 4 sent to Luzira for six months for alleged difficulties in paying a bank loan.
Bobi Wine who termed the incident as unfortunate said that together with his team, they have launched a drive to the same the former MP who is currently in Luzira.
Bobi Wine said he has also reached out to Mr. Kantinti’s family, friends and well-wishers to see how they can be helpful to secure his freedom.
“I have requested my legal team to get in touch with his legal team and establish the facts, see how we can be of help, and also deliver my contribution to them” Bobi Wine said in a statement.
He added that challenges of this nature can happen to all everyone and that it is prudent to always stand with each other in times of need.
The Ex MP Kantinti was sent to Luzira Prison for failing to clear his Bank loan.
Kantinti is to spend six months in Luzira or until he clears all the UGX260m loan.
According to reports, the former legislator failed to clear the loan he took from Standard Chartered Bank in June 2016.
He allegedly borrowed UGX300m from the said bank which he was supposed to pay back in 50 installments over a period of four years, with a 25 per cent interest.
According to reports, in 2017, the embattled former MP however, started defaulting on his monthly payments which compelled the bank to run to Kampala High Court.
In May this year, High Court Deputy Registrar in charge of executions Flavia Nabakooba issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Kantinti which prompted his arrest on June 27, 2019.
In 2017, Mr. Kantinti lost a by election to musician turned politician alias Bobi Wine.
