Hope for girls as Kadaga breaks ground for sanitary towel factory

BUSHENYI – School girls in the greater Bushenyi region of Western Uganda will soon have a reason to stay in school longer when the construction of a factory to produce reusable sanitary towels is completed.

Breaking ground for the factory on Friday, 21 June 2019, the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, hailed Bushenyi Woman MP and also Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Mary Karooro Okurut for taking on the mantle to build the factory.

“I am happy that the issue of girl’s education is taking centre stage in the country and I thank Hon. Karooro Okurut for the initiative that is going to enable many girls to study,” Kadaga said.

The factory complex in Nyakabirizi Town, Bushenyi District is funded Karooro Okurut Foundation. It will also comprise of a fortified food mill and operate as youth skilling centre.

The Speaker further appreciated Karooro Okurut for the skilling project which she said, is going to advance the human resource potential in the area and also improve the nutrition of the people.

Kadaga also advised the girls to stay in school and called upon them to plant trees and sell seedlings as a way of conserving the environment and earning some extra income.

Hon. Karooro Okurut, who thanked Kadaga for always standing firm on issues affecting girls, explained that the factory will support the many girls who abandon school because of lack of sanitary towels during their menstruation periods.
