Detectives from Kira Road Police Station have arrested a senior Uganda People’s Defense force officer over impersonation.
Major Robert Mugumya, a UPDF officer was arrested on Wednesday following a tip from staff of Bet City in Kisaasi, near the city centre.
Kampala Metropolitan Area Spokesperson Luke Oweyisigyire said Mugumya and three others are accused for allegedly impersonating officials of the Lotteries and Gaming Board.
The other suspects arrested together with the officer include Mark Mugume, Joseph Mugisha and a prison warder Augustine Ngabirano.
Upon arrest, Oweyisigyire said, the suspects were taken to their respective homes for a search.
Four lottery slot machines were recovered. The detectives also found a motor vehicle registration number UAA 034 E.
According to Mr Owoyesigyire, police has been receiving complaints about the suspects defrauding betting companies.
“So far more than 18 complaints have been registered at Kiira road police station about the four people,” Owoyesigyire said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects have been confiscating lottery machines and picking money from the areas of Kisaasi, Bukoto, Makerere Kikoni, Matugga, Masulita and Kivulu.
Oweyisigyire said the suspects are currently being held on tentative charges of impersonation, theft and obtaining money by false pretense.
