RIP: Former Health minister James Makumbi.

KAMPALA–Former minister of health James Makumbi is dead.

Dr Makumbi was found dead at his country home in Bbaale county, Kayunga district this morning (Monday), according to a close relative.

By press time, the cause of his death had not yet been established, but a relative said Makumbi who also once served as UPDF chief of medical services had been bedridden for some time.

Makumbi came to the limelight in the 1990s, when as a Minister of Health, he was kidnapped by a rebel outfit commanded by renegade UPDF soldier, Herbert Itongwa, an event that made headlines for more than a week.

The Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr Diana Atwine, tweeted saying: “I am deeply saddened by the passing on of Dr James Makumbi this morning. Uganda will dearly miss you. May he rest in peace.”

His body has been taken to Mulago national referral hospital for postmortem.

Dr Makumbi is survived a wife and several children.
