KAMPALA – Makerere University has Thursday, March 7, hosted a career expo organized by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), at which students were coached on how to meet their career goals.

Several students commended the expo as timely as they were in their second and final years, a point where they were studying their career aspirations.

Ms. Agatha Tumuhirwe, a second-year student of Journalism and Communication, said she had interacted with some of her role models.

“I have learnt so much from the experts. It was a great opportunity for me because I now know why good communication is very vital in any business,” she said appreciating the initiative taken up by the organizers.

While speaking to students at Makerere’s main hall, Mr. Joel Ssenyonyi a news anchor at NTV Uganda said the career expo gives university students the opportunity to explore different career options and gain practical knowledge on how to sustain their careers.

He urged students to “major in majors and minor in minors, saying that there is a lot of competition in the job market but students ought to focus on their goals.

Mr. Awel Nwihangwe the head of Government-Citizen Interaction Centre (GCIC), a project under the ICT and national guidance ministry tipped students to focus on value addition.

“The impressions you make on people matters,” he said.

A number of topics are listed for discussion across the different universities in Uganda including jobs of the future and taking the right path, enterprise development, finding your place in the crowd and building a strong career foundation and how to work your way to the top.

Others are building a personal brand, how to prepare for a job interview and Internship opportunities.

A series of similar events are planned to be held at Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Kyambogo, Gulu, Ndejje, Uganda Martyrs University, and Kampala University, among others.

The career 2019 expo will end on Monday, April 29 at Bishop Stuart University Mbarara.
